Art Meets Architecture: Behind the Scenes with Cátia Sander

Hey, hello there, friend!

What makes a house feel like home?

It’s not just the layout or the light, it’s the feeling. The invisible thread that ties your memories, your mood, and your energy together. And more often than not, that thread is art.

This week, I had the joy of sitting down with my dear friend Cátia Sander, an LA-based architectural and interior designer who brings spaces to life with soul and intentionality. We talked about something we both deeply believe: that art isn't an afterthought. It's the heartbeat of a home.

Here’s what I learned from our conversation, and how you can apply it in your own space.

1. Art Isn’t Just Decoration, It’s the Soul of the Room

“Art brings emotion, depth, and storytelling to a space. A well-designed home is not just about function and form, but about feeling.” – Cátia Sander

From the very first moment she walks into a project, Cátia already holds space for the art, even if the final piece hasn’t been selected yet. That’s something I deeply resonated with.

Too often we treat art like the last-minute cherry on top. But what if it was the first spark? The anchor that inspires the mood of the entire space? Whether it's an abstract piece that evokes childhood memories or a bold painting that declares who you’ve become, art has a way of speaking the unspeakable. And when it's chosen with emotion, it doesn’t just “match the couch”, it moves you.

2. Size Matters—But So Does Energy

If you’ve ever stared at a blank wall wondering, Is this piece too small?, you’re not alone.

“Scale is everything. Art should anchor the space, not float in it.” – Cátia

Her tip? If in doubt, go slightly bigger than smaller, especially above sofas or beds. Or try grouping smaller pieces into a gallery wall to create impact. But beyond dimensions, there’s something else to consider: how the piece feels. Does it hold its own? Does it tell your story? Does it invite you in? (And if you're still unsure, a roll of painter's tape and a little playtime goes a long way.)

3. Mix the Eras—Create a Dialogue

One of my favorite parts of our chat was when we talked about mixing styles. I asked Cátia about blending contemporary art with vintage interiors, something I love doing in my own collectors' homes.

“That’s where personality comes in. Contemporary art in a rustic setting adds contrast and energy, while vintage pieces can ground a more minimal space.”

There’s no need to “stick to the rules.” Your space is a reflection of you, all your layers, stories, travels, dreams. And that means your art can sit beautifully beside a handmade ceramic from Tulum or your grandmother’s antique mirror. The only rule? Let it be a conversation, not a competition.

4. The Most Common Mistake (and How to Fix It)

Let’s talk logistics. One of the biggest mistakes Cátia sees?

“Hanging art too high! The center should be 57–60 inches from the floor—eye level for most people.”

This one made me laugh because I’ve been guilty too. A small shift in placement can completely transform how your art is experienced. Lower it, live with it, and see what happens. You’ll be surprised how much more connected it feels.

5. Let Art Find You

One thing Cátia said that stayed with me:

“Don’t rush. Try it in a few spots before committing, it’s part of the process.”

Whether you're a seasoned collector or just bought your first original piece, there’s beauty in the slow discovery. Let the art guide you. Try it in your hallway. Above your desk. Next to the bookshelf. See where it belongs not just visually, but energetically. Because when art is placed with intention, it doesn’t just hang. It lives.

The Takeaway (and a Personal Invitation)

Your home doesn’t need more perfectly curated decor, it needs more you. Art is one of the most powerful and immediate ways to bring your story, your soul, and your energy into your space.
