In Reality Opposites Are One; Art Shows This*

Eli Siegel's*

Hey, hello there, friend!

I want to share something very special that I discovered during my artist residency in France. While staying at the chateau, I found a printed copy of a fascinating piece of writing by Eli Siegel in the breakfast area. It was my first time reading it, and I think you'll love it too.

Eli Siegel was a famous thinker who believed that art and life are deeply connected. He wrote about how different things in the world come together to create beauty. This idea is called "In Reality Opposites Are One; Art Shows This."

It might sound complicated, but I'll break it down so it's easy to understand.

You can find the original version HERE!

Eli Siegel's Writing: "In Reality Opposites Are One; Art Shows This"

1. Freedom and Order Everything beautiful has two parts: one part is wild and free, and the other part is organized and makes sense.

2. Sameness and Difference Art shows how things can be alike but also very different, making them interesting.

3. Oneness and Manyness Art shows how everything is connected as one, but also made up of many different parts.

4. Impersonal and Personal Every piece of art is about the big world around us and also about the feelings of the person who made it.

5. Universe and Object Art focuses on small, specific things, but also helps us think about the whole universe.

6. Logic and Emotion Art has a logical side that makes sense and an emotional side that makes us feel things.

7. Simplicity and Complexity Art can be simple and easy to understand, but also very detailed and complex.

8. Continuity and Discontinuity Art shows a smooth flow of ideas, but also highlights individual, separate parts.

9. Depth and Surface Art has both an obvious, surface meaning and a deeper, hidden meaning.

10. Repose and Energy Art can make us feel calm and relaxed, but also full of energy and excitement.

11. Heaviness and Lightness Art can feel light and joyful, but also serious and important.

12. Outline and Color In art, the lines and shapes work together with the colors to create a complete picture.

13. Light and Dark Art shows the world as bright and clear, but also as dark and mysterious.

14. Grace and Seriousness Art can be playful and fun, but also meaningful and serious.

15. Truth and Imagination Art combines real, true things with imagination and creativity, showing us both the ordinary and the extraordinary.
