Pavilion honors an iconic South Bay landmark — the Manhattan Beach Pier glowing under a pink sky. Created for Drica Lobo’s Painting Challenge 2025, perfect for coastal lovers and collectors of California charm.

STUDIO NOTES: Since I see this pier every morning on my jog, I decided to paint it again, but this time as a mini! I’ve done larger versions and a few commissions of this scene, but creating it in a smaller format definitely requires another level of skill and intuition. For this piece, I leaned into more texture, with intuitive and assertive brushstrokes, inspired by a class I took with @katerinaspopova. She introduced me to the technique called alla prima (Italian for “at first attempt”), a style of direct painting where layers of wet paint are applied to wet paint. It’s fast, spontaneous, and full of movement. Even though I work with acrylics, the energy of this technique still applies, painting quickly, while everything is still alive and wet.You probably know the Manhattan Beach Pier, it’s iconic and one of my favorite subjects to paint. I hope you love this little version as much as I do!
